History

Before European settlement the area around Ocean Grove were occupied by the Wathawurung people who were attracted to the area for the great fishing and birdlife. Ocean Grove is now the largest town on the Bellarine Peninsula. The main strip, The Terrace is home to the Ocean Grove Citizens Club at 101, The Terrance, Ocean Grove.

The first meeting of the Citizens Club was held in the old Ocean Grove Fire Station on 27th February 1963, where 31 people who were present donated two shillings each. This was the start of the citizens club taking possession of our current premises 12th December 1966, the hall was added in November 1970 and officially opened 11th July 1971.  All funds to complete the buildings were raised by the members and local businesses.  All loans from the shire/council were repaid in full.

Thanks to the hard work of  our founders who got the Citizens Club started Messer's A. Ahern (opened the meeting), F. Ash (First elected President) , F. Merrish, and Councillor Reg Guyett, and major sponsors  Mr Lee Man Yee -Tien Wah Café- Geelong, Mr E.M. Frier - Frier & Co Estate Agent, Geelong, Mr Liddall - State Bank, Ocean Grove and Reg Guyett, owner of Guyett Real Estate Ocean Grove

Location

The Terrace, the street where The Citizens Club is located, is a vibrant cosmopolitan shopping area with quality shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The streetscape has been upgraded and is decorated with shark fin metal bollards giving the street a great nautical look. Al fresco dining is all the go with many places offering food or refreshments in the outdoors.

The town has also been a popular location for filming, the ABC series Sea Change, filmed during the 1990s, used many locations around Ocean Grove and the film Kenny featuring a toilet hirer was also filmed in the area.
